The Office – Viewing Party

Now this is what I’m talkin’ about! This week’s episode was great; there were some really funny moments that made us laugh out loud.
The office staff was invited to Gabe’s apartment for a Glee watching party. Michael was partially jealous throughout the whole thing. At one point he left the rest of the group to watch the show in one of the bedrooms, it was a bit awkward. Gabe had laid out all the fixings for a make-your-own-pizza station. This segment was particularly funny to me. On Monday nights I visit my best friend, and he normally makes his own pizza – it’s a trip to watch him do it. He tosses the dough in the air much like Michael did. Ironically enough, my friend also has a ceiling fan in his kitchen. Thankfully, there haven’t been any collisions with the fan at his house; although there have been some close calls! When Michael hit that fan with the dough, I loved it. I immediately thought of my friend and started laughing. I almost live that moment every week!
Dwight was able to stop Cece’s crying and Pam’s opinion of him changed quickly. To make sure that he stayed with the baby she had Jim get beer and pizza for Dwight. Jim had to feed it to Dwight as he held Cece. The whole thing was weird to watch. The look Dwight gave Jim as he was drinking that beer was almost something I shouldn’t see. It was unnatural.
Shorty after that, Kevin made his way into the bedroom and got under the covers of the bed, then started eating food. He wanted to “eat pigs in a blanket, in a blanket.” That was so funny. Like Stanley, He makes me laugh whenever he speaks. Just the things he says and the way he says them.
Perhaps the greatest moment of the night came at the very beginning of the episode. Everyone was at work and the Scranton Strangler was involved in some sort of stand-off with the police. Gabe told everyone to get back to work – you never know how long those stand-offs could last. It could be another Waco. Then Erin chimed in, “It’s pronounced Wack-O.” I DIED! Four months ago, we were playing a game with my wife’s family and her sister pronounced Waco just like Erin did. Of course I had to re-live that family moment with my wife. We really had a great laugh!

Glee – Never Been Kissed

I can’t believe I’m about to admit this – I have actually watched Glee. It’s not the typical TV show that interests me, but when my wife is watching it and I’m in the living room, it’s hard not to watch it with her.
I had heard the hype leading up to this week’s episode and though it was worth a look. The episode was about bullying and there were several examples of that throughout the show. The most anticipated storyline involved Kurt, who was being bullied for being the only openly gay student in the high school. I thought the whole show was great, there were a few moments where we could actually feel what the students were feeling as they were bullied.
It was inspiring to see Kurt stand up for himself after his bully pushed him into a row of lockers. It takes a lot of courage to stand up to bulling and I hope anyone watching felt empowered to stand up for themselves. At the end of the episode, poor Kurt was shown on the floor in front of his locker after being knocked over yet again. Unfortunately, the bullying will go on. The best thing that we (and Kurt) can do is to put it into perspective and be comfortable with who we are.
On the lighter side, I do have a few observations that I’d like to share. Didn’t you think it was weird when Coach Beiste told Will that she has never been kissed? We all knew it was coming, but what teacher kisses another teacher at school like that? Glee Never Been KissedIt was a nice gesture but Will was taking quite a chance. Come to think of it, didn’t he kiss Sue Sylvester a few weeks ago? What’s up with this guy? In a normal school, he’d be a walking, talking (and singing) lawsuit waiting to happen.
Later in the episode Blaine shows up to help Kurt confront his bully. After their unsuccessful attempt to talk to the bully Blaine offers to buy Kurt lunch. I thought to myself, “What kind of school do these kids go to?” What if Kurt doesn’t have lunch period right now? And doesn’t Blain have his own school to attend? Is he skipping class? I know it’s just a TV show, but these are funny things to consider.

The Office: Christening

This week’s episode focused on Cece’s christening. Somehow the entire office was at the ceremony and everyone at the church got invited to a luncheon afterward. Of course, crazy things happened during the luncheon. There wasn’t enough food for everyone, Dwight kept trying to sell printers and it was discovered that Angela had filled her purse with scones; according to Kevin, “thousands of them!” Not to be outdone, Michael seemed genuinely moved by the church group that was preparing to go to Mexico to help the underprivileged there. He ultimately made his way onto the bus with the church group. Shortly afterward, Andy joined Michael on the bus. Michael was so inspired by the church group that he didn’t think through his decision (as is usually the case). It was funny to listen to Michael and Andy talk themselves out of helping the needy in Mexico. They made a big enough scene that they were let off of the bus.
Overall, I think this was a mediocre episode. There were a few funny one-liners that stood out and Dwight was his normal self. Stanley's FaceOne of Stanley’s lines really made me laugh, “The only way I’m running to Mexico is if they have sandwiches.” His delivery is priceless and I laugh almost every time he speaks.
I really enjoy watching The Office and could watch it for hours on end (sometimes I actually do!) I hope that the upcoming episodes do a better job continuing the tradition of great comedy. Given the fact that Steve Carell will be leaving the show at the end of this season, they need to build up some momentum to ensure that fans of the show stick around to watch next season.

The Office – An Office Costume Party

My wife and I are finally caught up on The Office and were able to catch this week’s episode as it aired. As the episode began, my wife said ,“It’s nice to watch them live. Now we’re watching with the rest of the world!” It was different watching the show with commercials; we’re used to watching through Netflix and haven’t had to deal with commercials. Also, since the episodes are generally pretty short, we can run through 2 or 3 episodes in a single sitting. Needless to say, that I’m going to adjust to the difference. More on that later.
This episode focused on a Halloween costume party, pretty much everyone was dressed up for the occasion. Of course, Jim wasn’t fully participating – which is par for the course when it comes to Halloween episodes. It was cool to see Packer in the office, but it seemed a little random that he’d be there. I wonder if we’ll see more of him in the coming episodes. Scranton StranglerAs far as the costumes, I liked Kevin as Michael Moore, Gabe’s Lady Gaga costume was very detailed and Stanley really got into the catwalk when it was time to show case his costume. Dwight was hilarious as the Scranton Strangler. I think I know what I’m going to be for Halloween. Watch out Stephanie!
Since the show is only a half hour long and commercials were peppered in there, it felt like the episode really flew by. Before I knew it, the show was over! I think it ended abruptly. Immediately afterward, we were put right into the next show, Outsourced. There wasn’t any break between the shows, which I’m sure helps to carry viewers from one show to the next. I just wasn’t used to that.
Anyway, after the show was over I felt a little let down. One of my friends has told me that he doesn’t think The Office is as funny as it used to be. Now I think I see what he means. The first few episodes of this season were OK, I though a few were pretty funny, but the most recent episode leaves me wondering. It could just be one bad episode and we just happened to start watching at the wrong time. We’ll have to see what the coming weeks bring.
It was great to finally be current with one of our favorite shows, but after Thursday’s episode, I wasn’t as satisfied as I thought I’d be. That’s what she said!
